Day Off
This is the first time in my entire working life that I actually did not need a day off, but got to enjoy one anyway. Since my work at the hostel does not seem like work at all, there is really not a need for a day off. The only difference between today and any other day was I did not have to remember to be somewhere at a certain time.
I met a guy at the hostel this evening that just got back from climbing Mt. Kilamanjaro sp? in Africa. He has high hopes of climbing the biggest mountain on each continent on the earth. So far he has knocked off Africa, North America, and South America from his list. He hopes to climb Everest one day, except that there is a $65,000 obstacle standing in the way. That's right, it costs $65,000 to buy a permit to climb Everest! I think that's pretty ridiculous. Climbing Mt. Everest is such a man thing to do. Have you ever met a woman that wants to climb Everest? I haven't, and this guy has only met two.
Everyone can relax now because I have my own bike. It is green and blue splatter painted with disengaged handle brakes and gears, however there are break pedals. I did ride on the back of a bike again and I opted to jump onto it and land in a straddle. I definitely prefer this method.
I went and explored the city a little bit today. The trees are starting to bud and the sun was shining all day. It was great!
I have been so encouraged by my co-worker's testimonies. I talked to a girl last night that was raised Muslim and accepted Christ three years ago. Her father does not even know that she is a Christian or that she is working in the ministry. Her mother knows and fortunately did not disown her. It was so encouraging to hear how God pursued her throughout her life, and how he is still blessing her every day.
It is also so good to hear all of my roomates' stories about how they ended up here in Amsterdam working for this ministry. God has called each one of us to serve him here, to be his hands and his feet. It is also so good when a guest at a hostel tells one of us that they are not yet a Christian but they know without a doubt that God has led them to our hostel. I am constantly reminded about how big, but how personal our living God is.
Well, it has been a good day off.

Good afternoon, Miss Melissa. Greetings from West Virginia. I am so happy that you have arrived safe and sound. I intend to have my children at church pray for you each Wednesday evening at our Faith Feast. I can see God is using you already and I am sure that you have inspired someone with your strong faith and the light of Jesus that just shines around you! Have fun but be safe. Know that we love you very much and we are proud of you. It isn't always easy to follow the call of God, but I believe that you are doing just that.
Love you and miss you,
Aunt Lynn
Hey Melissa! I'm so glad that you are enjoying yourself in Amsterdam and that you love your job! I was thinking about you today because in Physics a group of students were talking about churches and the Bible, and I had been half- listening when a few subjects we had discussed before came up in conversation. I used the knowledge you had given me on the subjects, which included predestination, to contribute to the conversation, and the kids seemed to think it made a lot of sense. So if you ever get discouraged over there in your missions work, remember that it's the little things that count, and you could be one pivotal step along a person's journey.
Love you!
Michelle
Thanks for the post Aunt Lynn. I am so touched that your kids are going to be praying for me! Tell them I am very thankful for their prayers.
Michelle-I can't believe you were discussing predestination in class. That is the most impossible mystery in the bible to try to figure out. Thanks for keeping in touch. Hey-did you pass the check along? Thanks.
Love you both!
Hey MP,
very glad to see you are settling in so well over there. Your are such and encouragement to me and the other leaders at WVU Bible studies. Our first missionary. That alone makes you pretty cool. Have you been over to see any of the GCM people yet. Hope all things are going well for you and if you ever get a chance if you could send me your address over there i know there are a few people who would love to have it. We all will be praying for you MP. Miss you here at WV but very proud of what you are doing.
Hey Melissa,
You're there! This is Beth's Mom in NH. I found your blog page linked to Beth's new page. Now I can follow your doings and be praying knowledgably. Be sure to let me know if you visit any art or history museums! I recently returned from two weeks on an archaeology study tour in Egypt. I loved it!! I was sorry to hear about the trouble in Cairo yesterday, though.
In Christ,
Debi C.
Nic culp!
How in the heck are ya! I got to see Joe Dunn, Linda Kitchen, Sam, Patricia, and Eva at the Zolder last night. It is a bit surreal being here.
Today I rode down to Leidseplein and Vondelpark. It brought back lots of memories.
Thank you for all of your prayers! My ministry would be nothing without prayer!
Debi!
Beth told me about your trip to Egypt. She said you loved it. I'm sure your Sunday school class will benefit from your visit to Egypt. I haven't been to any art or history museums since I've moved here. I would really like to go to the Bible museum within the next week or two, and I would also love to visit the Anne Franke House. Everyone that has been there has been touched very deeply.
