My car died this week. Here's the whole story: I was driving to work Wednesday morning when I realized it was buy-one-muffin-get-one-free-day at Perkins restaurant. Luckily, this realization meant I had to get off of the interstate...so I'm sitting at a red light on the interstate's exit ramp when I notice "steam" rising from the hood of my car. I thought to myself, "Oh it's probably normal. The steam is probably from my engine going from cold to hot." Well, then I started smelling an AWFUL burning smell. I started to panic, thinking that my car was ready to explode and me and the guy selling newspapers on the corner were going to be gonners. Finally the light turned to green and I pulled my car into the Perkins lot. At this point, horrible smelling smoke was pouring out from under my hood and also out of the wheel well. I jumped out of my car and did what anyone would do in such a situation. I called my mom. So many thoughts were running through my head...I was going to miss work, I would have to call a sub, I don't know how to call a sub... Luckily my mom answered her cell phone and she happened to be driving right by me on her way to work. She pulled into the lot, and told me I could borrow her car for the day. So I took her to work and returned to Perkins. I figured I should still take advantage of the free muffin day so I sat at a table, had some coffee and a banana blueberry muffin and ordered a tow truck. This break down really was ideal. I mean, I broke down at Perkins on FREE MUFFIN DAY while my mom was driving past. It was all good. Until I got the tow truck bill...$45 and the $1120 car bill. I fried my head gaskets. Both of them. I had to get 2 new ones plus a timing belt. I talked the dealership down $200 from the original $1250 quote and talked them into throwing in a timing belt and thermostat (if one was needed). This happened on Wed and the dealership thought my car wouldn't be done until the following Thurs. They worked hard on it for 2 days straight and returned my car to me by Fri. My wonderful mom who must be part superhero let me use her car in the meantime. All of this added some more craziness to my normally crazy week.

Hey all of you in Europe- my friend Greta is now at the Shelter. She's the cutie with blonde dreds. If you're ever at the Shelter look her up. She's not technically a West Virginian, but I think she passes as one. (That's a compliment Greta).

I conducted a few pieces on our middle school concert on Monday. It was a learning experience. That's about all I can say about it.

Good job if you read all of this!
I won't waste any more of your time!

Cool story (yeah, I read ALL of it!), but not cool that you have to pay so much.
Why is everything so expensive?
Well, it makes Free Muffin Day even better!

Nynke! Nice to see you-even if it is just a pic! Thanks for reading my story. I miss Amsterdam and all of my Shelter friends so much that I think I'm going to come over this summer. Maybe the Shelter could use a cleaner supervisor for a few months?

Beth- it's a 2002 subaru outback legacy. btw I would love to come and visit you guys this spring/summer. Maybe over my spring break?

Greta- ok. you can be a West Virginian.
